The president and CEO of Canwest Publishing, Dennis Skulsky has resigned effective April 30.

Skulsky, the former publisher of the Vancouver Sun and Province, stepped down so that "he can spend more time with his family and pursue other opportunities closer to his home in British Columbia", according to a Canwest news release.

He will remain as an adviser to the company until August 31. For months, rumours have circulated that Skulsky will end up running the B.C. Lions football team.

Skulsky rose up through the ranks of the circulation department of Southam and Hollinger (previous owners of the Canwest Canadian newspaper chain) before Canwest appointed him as publisher of the two Vancouver daily papers in 2001.

He became president and CEO of Canwest Publishing in 2006.

Meanwhile, the Globe and Mail has reported that Toronto-based publishing giant Torstar Corporation has emerged as a bidder for Canwest's newspaper empire, which includes 11 daily papers and 35 community papers.

Torstar owns 20 percent of Victoria-based Black Press, which is also reportedly interested in buying Canwest's newspaper assets.

Other bidders include a group headed by Leonard Asper, the former Canwest Global Communications Corp. CEO, and another group headed by Paul Godfrey, a long-time Canwest director.

Canwest LP, as the publishing entity is known, is in bankruptcy protection. A group of creditors led by the Bank of Nova Scotia is trying to find a buyer.

I'm dreading what he'll do to screw up the Lions. We don't need another Neocon.
