If you missed Flamenco Rosario’s Mis Hermanas, artistic director Rosario Ancer’s love letter to her sisters in Mexico, when it debuted two years ago, you’re in luck. The dance-theatre work returns to the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre this Sunday and Monday (May 16 and 17), with a special all-Spanish performance on Tuesday (May 18). It goes far beyond the castanets and stamping feet of flamenco, working in projections of old photographs and a narrative that traces Ancer’s fascinating journey from the citrus groves of Mexico to the tablaos of Spain and finally to Vancouver. Adding to the atmosphere are live guitarist Manuel “el Lito” and colourful, wailing cantaora Angelita la del Lito, both from Spain, as well as percussionist Alvaro Rubio from Mexico. When it premiered, the Straight wrote that it was “so saturated with personal meaning that it transports the art form into a new and even more moving realm”. How perfect that Ancer will finally be able to take the work home later this year, in October, when it travels to Mexico.
