Watermelon bakes a new cannabis-cooking Web series

A new marijuana-cooking show has hit the Web, thanks to Canadian weed diva Watermelon—but don’t expect a lot of toking.

“We don’t smoke any pot, [and] we don’t actually really reference marijuana too much,” Watermelon told the Straight by phone about her new Web series, Baking a Fool of Myself. Each episode begins with the disclaimer “The following video is intended for medically exempted patients who would prefer to ingest their medicine rather than smoke it” and Watermelon refers to the THC component as “shake flour” in most recipes.

A comedian, long-time entrepreneur, and Rio Theatre investor, Watermelon began her foray into marijuana cookery 20 years ago and previously hosted Watermelon’s Baked and Baking DVD in 2002. With her newest show, she wanted to break free of stereotypes surrounding the pot community.

“I did a lot of research on-line to see what other marijuana cooking shows are out there and they’re just really terrible,” she said. “What I wanted to do was remove this whole stigma for stoners”¦.There’s a lot of classy, sophisticated people who smoke pot so really the whole notion was to redo a cooking show—but with great production values.”

Shot in her own kitchen, Baking a Fool of Myself features the former High Times cover girl at her 1950s best, complete with pin-up hair and a jazzy intro. The series also includes Watermelon’s 67-year-old mother, who offers baking tips and tricks.

“She [her mom] doesn’t smoke pot or eat pot—she doesn’t really enjoy it—but she’s a fabulous supporter of me,” said Watermelon.

The first episode of the series focuses on extraction, with Watermelon demonstrating three ways to prepare marijuana for baking—”really the most important thing to know”, she said.

Two subsequent episodes feature recipes for No Frownie Brownies and Peanut Budder Cookies, and Watermelon is hoping to film future episodes about gramola (“Granola with a gram in every box!”), chocolate mint marijuana cheesecake, and rum resin balls.

“The kitchen to me is such a creative place,” she said. “I feel like a dancer or a painter when I’m in there. It’s my art.”

This lady is very delightful, and the show looks like fun. I hate eating, smoking and vaporizing marijuana, and what it does to people, but I hate even more the way the corporations in collusion with the government have exploited this issue to erode rights, bolster the security state, fill prisons and prop up the lumber, cotton, oil, and pharmaceuticals industries while channeling hundreds of billions of dollars in narcotics money into war and oil stocks.

I was just chillin at 420 art gallery this year, then I turn around and see her selling cookies, and i'm like whoaaaaamagawddd, the real watermelon girl, just like the internet said, I must buy a cookie. And I did, and it was good.

      End prohibition.

Nice, work, Dollface. And work our Watermelon does. Likely harder than most I know! Thanks for your ongoing and unrelenting work as an activist, for being a genuine sweetie and for the amazing cookies from Shambala, '03, many a New Year's and silly Friday nights in Vancouver. Inspiring.

Thank you Georgia Straight for this great article. However, I have never called myself "the high priestess of pot" not once.
I have called myself a "Weed Diva" a time or two in the past.
      Cheers

Strategis (below) "hate(s) eating, smoking and vaporizing marijuana, and what it does to people".
I guess Strategis hates curing cancer, preventing cancer, heart disease, strokes and Alzheimer's disease, effectively treating epilepsy, asthma, multiple sclerosis and glaucoma, and growing extra brain cells. Though the rest of Strategis' sentence does make sense.

Good for Watermelon! More people need to integrate cannabis into "normal" lives. She's right. There are a lot of people who ingest cannabis and who deserve to have the stigma attached to cannabis.
And you can start by ditching the terms, "marijuana" and "dope".
