City of Burnaby's lush eco-sculptures make for a different PNE Fair attraction

Tomorrow marks the opening day of the PNE Fair and 100th anniversary of Vancouver’s favourite family-friendly summer send-off.

Expect the return of all the usual suspects, including the Superdogs and the West Coast Logger Show, and big-name concerts nightly, but why not branch out and check out a different attraction this year?

This year, from August 6 to September 21, the PNE Fair will again host a collection of eco-sculptures—perhaps already familiar to residents of Burnaby, where they have been kept on display throughout the spring and summer months since 2005.

The living artworks are painstakingly grown inside a three-dimensional frame—after careful calculation of soil requirements—by the City of Burnaby Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services. The result is a lush, colourful horticultural creation that would be the envy of Edward Scissorshands.

A special eco-scuplture in honour of the Fair’s centennial, as well as a carousel horse from the Burnaby Village Museum, will be installed around the Safeway Farm Country site of agricultural demonstrations and displays.

For more information on the sculptures and where they can usually be found, visit the City of Burnaby's Web Site.
