Save Bears Found in Drug Bust petition goes viral

Move over, HST petition. There’s a new cause that has captured the hearts of B.C. residents and global citizens alike.

Last week, reports of a RCMP bust in late July of a marijuana grow-op located near Christina Lake in the Kootney region were released. Usually news of $1-million pot plantations aren’t greeted with much surprise or interest by locals who treat them like a given in the B.C. interior, but the story made international headlines when it was discovered that the police raid was complicated by a dozen black bears living on the lot, prompting many to speculate that the animals were enlisted as something straight out of Stephen Colbert’s nightmares, a trained army of guard bears.

Doreen McCrindle, a self-described animal lover from Calgary and the public face of the now global campaign, has since created a petition—currently sitting at 2,409 signatures—to save the bears from the B.C. Ministry of Environment, who could order the bears put down.

McCrindle has even received offers of donations to pay for a yet to be decided course of action for rehabilitating the bears who conservationists worry may prove too mellow to survive in the wild, apparently owing to a human-provided diet of dog food, and not because they were raised in a habitat of mild hallucinogens. The latest development in the quaintly Canadian story includes news that B.C. actor Jason Priestly of 90210 fame has since pledged $1,300 towards the cause.

The petition “Save Bears Found in Drug Bust!” can be found on-line, along with various comments espousing the innocence of the bears in the matter who, in all likelihood, didn’t ask to be born into a life of drugs and dog food.

The co-opting of one of natures magnificent creatures should be dealt with severely and summarily. Considerable punishment should await those responsible for this outrage.

The blame should be put on the stupid drug laws that caused this!
