Douglas Coupland kicks off 2010 CBC Massey Lectures at the Chan Centre

The apocalypse never goes out of style, but its popularity does fluctuate. And there’s no doubt we’re seeing a wave of excitement about it at the moment, with big-selling books ranging from Justin Cronin’s viral-vampire epic The Passage to The Daily Show With Jon Stewart’s comical postmortem of the planet, Earth. Now, famed Vancouver author Douglas Coupland reflects the end-of-days zeitgeist with Player One: What Is to Become of Us (Anansi, $19.95), the wholly inventive “novel in five hours” he’ll be reading aloud as this year’s CBC Massey Lectures. Normally, of course, the annual Massey series is delivered in the standard declarative way. But Coupland—always on the lookout for a new route—will explore his themes through a small cast of fictional characters trapped in an airport lounge during a global catastrophe. The first stop on his cross-country tour to give these story-based talks will be right here, at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on Tuesday (October 12). Then he’s off to Regina, Charlottetown, Ottawa, and Toronto. CBC Radio One will broadcast Player One in its entirety from November 8 to 12.

Apocalyptic? Nothing could be scarier than the t-shirts he 'designed.' Great we get to hear five uh, characters who sound just like Doug - in an airport-wow-how millennial like-a Dougie circle jerk. Can't wait!
