Gordon Campbell has announced he is stepping down as B.C. premier.

Campbell said he is asking the B.C. Liberal Party executive to begin the process to select his replacement as soon as possible.

"This decision is what I believe is in the best interest of British Columbia, our government, our party, and the people who live here," Campbell said during a news conference this morning (November 3) in Vancouver. "At a time like this, everyone’s attention should be focused on helping our economy rebound from the global recession and move forward with an agenda that families can see is in their long-term interests. It’s time for a new person to lead the province."

Campbell said, “After considerable soul-searching and discussion with my family I’ve decided to ask the B.C. Liberal party executive to hold a leadership convention at the earliest possible date to select a new leader of the party,” he said.

Campbell has been premier since 2001.

I hope somebody is listening in Ontario. Families are beginning to struggle because of the same HST.

About time! Excellent! Screw the Liberals and their handling of transit and their corruption.

No more Evergreen Line and UBC Line crap talk and no more Liberals! Do what you can afford and don't promise what you can't! Get those damn 99bs off the trolley bus routes and get the trolley buses back in service!

Come on ... not again... didn't the NDP go thru this crap. Anything for these parties to stay in office. How about a new law. If Ruling Party leader steps down .... an election in 60 days.
My guess would be a turn out of 1%. We need a party that will rule by referendum.

      Good riddance.

Hopefully, future political leaders will make their attempts to pull the wool over the eyes of the populace less transparent.

It is amazing to me that we can't just give the man credit for making this decision and thank him for his service to the Province. Honestly, think before you start typing. Maybe consider some of the mistakes you have made, instead of blaming the government for all your woes. How about taking the high road for once? Just a thought.

Thanks for reducing 75% of the funding to arts and culture in the last two years Gordo.

Was your plan to leave a legacy void of arts, culture and heritage - if so, you succeeded. Imagine what a small portion of the $8B in Olympic-related spending could have done to retain and enhance our culture and heritage. What a waste.

Thanks for the crushing blows and for demoralizing this province's excellent artists, artsworkers, and organizations.

Will someone now change the BC Liberals name to BC Hyper-Conservatives.
