Six food and dining events

New Pho on the Block
When checking out the menu of new Vietnamese restaurant Delightful Cuisine (1745 Robson Street), it’s a plus when a passerby stops to say that it’s good, really good, and that she’s eaten there three times that week. Recommended? Crispy spring rolls; bánh mí¬ (marinated pork); a huge selection of pho (spicy and not) including beef, chicken or fish balls, and tripe; and curry chicken ($3.95 to $8.25).

Fromage and a Film
The busy cheesemongering Benton brothers, Jonah and Andrew, have opened a second Benton Brothers Fine Cheese shop at 3432 Cambie Street in digs once home to Mount Pleasant Cheese. There’s cheese from everywhere, crackers, condiments, charcuterie, and toothsome sandwiches like roasted bison with blue cheese. Wedged in tight beside the Park Theatre and open till 7 p.m. on weekdays and 6 p.m. on weekends, it’s a great go-to fast-food grab when taking in a movie.

Munchies and a Movie
This Monday (November 22) at 7 p.m., the Chefs’ Table Society of B.C. is hosting a family-friendly fundraiser at the Vancouver International Film Centre (1181 Seymour Street). The Pear Tree’s Scott Jaeger will provide finger food inspired by the film of the night, Ratatouille, and movie commentary. The $55 adult ticket price for this Cinema to Savour event includes wine and beer tastings, while the $15 kids’ ticket includes popcorn, chocolate mice, and more.

German Christmas on the plaza
The Queen Elizabeth Theatre plaza (West Georgia and Hamilton streets) is looking oh-so-festive as the first Vancouver Christmas Market—an outdoor, German-style Christmas fair—gets set to roll from November 24 to December 24, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Arrive hungry: treats like the traditional Christmas dessert Brataepfel (stuffed baked apples), stollen, sausages, spit-roasted suckling pig, beer from Munich, and Feuerzangenbowle (rum-kicked mulled wine) are sure to tempt. See www.vancouverchristmasmarket.com for more. Tickets ($5) are sold on-site.

Chowderheads Unite
The third annual Ocean Wise Chowder ChowDown takes place Wednesday (November 24) at the Vancouver Aquarium (845 Avison Way). That’s when 12 B.C. chefs—including Chris Whittaker of O’Doul’s Restaurant & Bar and Ryan Maule of Aqua Riva—will whip up their best sustainable soups. Sampling tickets cost $40 for all 12 chowders paired with B.C. craft brews. See www.oceanwisecanada.org

Food for Talk
In conjunction with its Home Grown: Local Sustainable Food exhibit, the Museum of Vancouver is hosting several upcoming events. On Saturday (November 20), there will be workshops for kids on seed saving and edible gardening. On Sunday (November 21), a discussion on the DTES Kitchen Tables Project. And next Thursday (November 25), James MacKinnon and Alisa Smith, authors of The 100-Mile Diet, will speak on innovative local food projects in other North American cities. Event admission varies.
