Vancouver's largest accessible playground officially opened today (December 11) at Kitsilano Beach Park.

Built at a cost of $540,000, the 0.2-hectare playground is found near the concession.

The playground, approved by the park board in July 2009, features rubber safety surfacing, a spinning climber, a sand play table, sensory garden areas, a play tower, and saucer swings.

Rick Hansen, whose foundation supported the project, joined Stephanie Cadieux, B.C.'s minister of community, sport and cultural development, and city politicians for a ceremony to open the playground.

Two other inclusive playgrounds like it have been built in Richmond and Whistler.

Kitsilano Beach Park's original playground is slated to be dismantled and grassed over.

I wish they wouldn't get rid of the original playground. When you're a child it seems so tall and complex; something that newer playground designs omit in their minimalistic and glossy designs. It would be a real loss.
