Liberal leadership candidate Moira Stilwell rolled out two campaign announcements focused on postsecondary education during a tour of northern B.C. today (January 14).

The former advanced education minister proposed a 50-percent increase in the value of the provincial "Passport to Education" program to encourage high school graduates to enroll at community colleges in regions with a high need for skilled workers.

Stilwell said increasing the maximum incentive for students who attend regional colleges from $1,000 to $1,500 would encourage more students to pursue skills training and employment outside of urban areas.

"Throughout northern B.C. we are seeing new growth in sectors such as oil and gas and sustainable energy and in mining," she said in a news release. "We now need to ensure that we are training the workforce that will be needed to support these sectors as they develop further."

Stilwell also said if she won the race to succeed Premier Gordon Campbell, she would invest $10 million over three years into infrastructure for the North West Community College in Terrace, to enhance training for mining-related trades.

10 mil to Terrace to support mining? Does that mean you're going to approve more mining permits too? Better get ready for D Suzuki. And why Terrace? I hear Bountiful could use some help.
