Two goals less than three minutes apart by Mikael Samuelsson and a strong penalty-killing unit made the difference in the Vancouver Canucks' 4-2 home victory over Calgary tonight (February 12).

Samuelsson, who was the game's first star, notched his 14th and 15th goals of the season midway through the second period after the Flames had taken a 2-1 lead.

Alex Burrows netted the other two Canuck goals, including one into an empty net at 19:18 of the third period.

The Flames' goal scorers were Tim Jackman and Curtis Glenross.

On many occasions in the second and third periods, the Flames applied pressure, but they were often stymied by goaltender Roberto Luongo and defenceman Kevin Bieksa.

The Canucks scored two power-play goals and killed all three penalties, including two in the third period.

In his first NHL game of the season, Canuck defenceman Sami Salo logged 16:34 of ice time, recorded one penalty, and ended the night at zero on the plus-minus scale.
