Vancouver is still the most livable city in the world, according to the Economist newspaper.

For the fifth straight year, the city has topped the Economist Intelligence Unit’s annual livability rankings.

Vancouver earned a score of 98 out of 100, based on factors including stability, health care, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

Two other Canadian cities also made the top 10.

Toronto came in at fourth place, and Calgary took the fifth spot.

Melbourne, Vienna, Helsinki, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, and Auckland round out the top 10.

These results seem pretty skewed - since no Swiss cities such as Zurich or Geneva (which score consistently in the top 3 on other rating systems) appear on the list at all.

Obviously the actual COST of living in Vancouver wasn't factored in.

The cost of living is factored in. From the white paper:
"Availability of good quality housing: Tolerable"

Although the weather measurement isn't very granular:
      "Climate: Discomfort to travellers: Acceptable"

Acceptable seems to be the highest rating. If Vancouver is acceptable then southern California doesn't get any bonus points where it should.

bowser, while you may feel the cost of living is high in Vancouver (and I agree on an average income vs av. price), the cost is much higher in Geneva.

It's a lot cheaper though a short train ride to the south, in France. It's also a lot cheaper in Delta than it is in Vancouver.

Most livable and one of the least affordable.

GIven the clientele the Economist caters to, business executives and managers, why aren't there more head offices in Vancouver if these people take the magazine's ratings seriously?

Notice where the lowest cities in the list are? Not a shocker. Vancouver is rated high in part because of it's ethnic makeup as well.

all that I can say is that it is becoming harder and harder to make ends meet in the lower mainland.it is impossible for the majority of people to buy housing.even rent has gone through the roof.God Help Us....
