Potassium iodide tablets offer protection from nuclear fallout

Potassium iodide tablets protect the thyroid gland from absorbing radioactive iodine. The thyroid becomes saturated with the iodine from the tablets, thus blocking absorption of radioactive iodine. Growing children are at the most risk for radioactive iodine exposure, so ensure that they take potassium iodide tablets if they are in danger of exposure. Radioactive iodine exposure has been linked to thyroid cancers.

Potassium iodide tablets only protect the thyroid gland and not other parts of the body. They should only be taken in a radiation emergency that involves the release of radioactive iodine, such as an accident at a nuclear power plant or an explosion of a nuclear bomb.

Dosage: Take 1 dose (130 mg adults, 65 mg children) every 24 hours after there has been an official announcement of risk of radioactive iodine exposure. Do not take potassium iodide tablets for longer than 10 days.

I originally read this article on Sonya's blog. I'm disappointed to see that all the natural approaches have been removed from her post. The original article that Sonya wrote is very detailed and contains a comprehensive list of natural approaches to protect yourself from radiation and nuclear fallout - I think it's really important to include ALL the things we can do to help protect ourselves, should the need arise. Please read the full article linked above under 'Little Mountain Homeopathy blog' or you can find it here: http://littlemountainhomeopathy.wordpress.com/2011/03/15/natural-treatme...

I believe the purpose of the short articles in the Straight is to peak one's interest enough to check it out. Thanks for the link. What I do is search engine and come up with a ton of stuff.

The dosage for children is not accurate in this report - see below for proper dosing:
Lactating women 130mg KI daily
Newborns-1 month 16mg KI daily includes nursing and non-nursing
1 month - 3 years 32mg KI daily
3 years - 18years 65mg KI daily

Children greater then 150 pounds should take the adult dose 130mg KI daily

Stop by Pharmasave 4th and Burrard and speak to the pharmacist if you have questions or need to purchase some capsules or liquid - just in case.

Just want to make it perfectly clear, I am not advocating for people to rush out and buy these tablets and start taking them immediately. They should be used during an emergency crisis only. The situation as it stands right now in Vancouver is not a nuclear emergency. People can get potassium iodide poisoning if they take these pills without needing to. http://littlemountainhomeopathy.wordpress.com/2011/03/18/potassium-iodid...

What? Not recommending homeopathic doses but ACTUAL iodine?
By the time the radioactive particles reach the BC coast, they will have been diluted by many orders of magnitude so as to be nearly undetectable. This....by homeopathic thinking should be the equivalent of a nuclear holocaust on our own shores.
Make up your homeopathic* mind

*diluted to the point of undetectability.

Where can I buy these over the counter?

Danny:

See the third comment above. I bought some there myself immediately after Fukushima, although I never ended up using them.
They are a bit expensive and not covered by drug plans (at least not then), and I believe the shelf life was relatively short (12 months or less), so if you are stockpiling or putting together an emergency kit, remember to rotate your stock.
