Watch out for Boni Barcia, the grizzled but affable political organizer of the NDP in the Filipino Canadian community.

Often content to play key but low-profile roles in civic, provincial, and federal elections, the stock of the former vice president of the Hospital Employees’ Union is soaring nowadays.

Barcia was one of two key Filipino Canadian community organizers for Adrian Dix, who won the race for the leadership of the B.C. NDP, the other being Vancouver-Kensington MLA Mable Elmore.

When Dix dropped by the Straight offices during the campaign, it was Barcia who accompanied the Vancouver-Kingsway MLA.

Barcia was also near the new B.C. NDP leader when New Democrats held their leadership assembly at the Vancouver Convention Centre on April 17.
