Freaky weather alert: 600-metre-tall waterspout captured on film

Here’s another freaky weather phenomenon you may never have heard of before: waterspouts.

Apparently Australia’s Channel 7 captured a series of waterspouts—which occur when tornadoes form over bodies of water—on Australia’s New South Wales coast, one 600 metres high.

Crazy. These things do occur out on Georgia Strait from time to time. I believe last fall was the last time we had waterspouts off our coast. Very dangerous things. Just think of how much a 600ft column of water that's 10 feet across must weigh...now imagine what that would do to a 28ft long Bayliner...or a windsurfer. Thankfully these things don't usually last very long (just a few minutes) before the weight of the water brings them crashing down.
