Anti-capitalist protesters descend on New York City, but where's the coverage?

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Twitter is blowing up right now about an entirely peaceful protest by over 50,000 people in New York City, which has been taking place since 2 p.m. EST.

Well, who the hell knows if 50,000 is an accurate count. Or maybe they've been there since noon. It's nearly impossible to find any accurate information as most mainstream media outlets aren't talking about it.

If you search the hashtag #OccupyWallStreet, you'll find thousands of people talking about the event, which is meant to protest the governments putting the interests of corporations over the interests of the general populace.

There are reports that Twitter itself is throttling the #OccupyWallStreet hashtag, sending many users to also use the hashtag #TakeWallStreet.

CNN is calling it "hundreds of protesters", although video from the scene shows several thousands on the ground. CNN is also claiming that this protest was an initiative of AdBusters, which put out a call earlier this year for "20,000 people [to] flood into lower Manhattan, set up tents, kitchens, peaceful barricades and occupy Wall Street for a few months."

Al Jazeera also notes that information can be found at OccupyWallSt.org, which "is unofficial and not affiliated with Adbusters or Anonymous."

Many on Twitter are saying there is a media blackout on the action, including on local TV outlets in NYC.

Similar protests are planned for Toronto, Greece, Spain, Belgium, France, and Iceland.

They are busy covering the unfortunate plane crash and TIFF. Also nobody mentioned that Canada is planning to support the US in the UN when Palestine asks for a seat. As per 22 minutes, Canada is the new asshole of N. America and not just because of oil sands.

What's the deal with calling communists "anti-capitalists"?
Are we going to start calling capitalists "anti-communists" too?

Mainstream media is part and parcel of corporate America, they won't bite the hand that feeds them either. Billions in ad revenues come from the likes of Exxon, the coal industry etc. Better to cover cats stuck in trees and Lady Gaga right?

Only 1000 marchers in an area of how many million? Being an American really really sucks today. :( SeizeDC cancelled until Spring. OccupyWallSt nets a 1000. Our last hope is October2011.

Not only do we fail to stand up, we even elected Geo Bush to a second term!

As an American I offer my apologies to the world. I am truely sorry.
