Vancouver Fringe Fest review: Hip.Bang! Improv hits some walls

Disappointment. The two-man improve troupe Hip.Bang! is generating buzz but, in the performance I saw, Devin Mackenzie and Thomas Hill repeatedly blocked one another’s suggestions. Worst response: “That’s stupid.” And they competed, each undermining the reality the other player was trying to establish: “Oh, drinking from the bottom of the bottle, I see.” It’s all jovial and the best thing about the improv I saw was the physical ease these guys have with one another. The second-best thing is their ability to braid together their narrative threads. But, too often, they go for quick laughs that lead to dead ends.
