Vancouver Fringe Fest review: Sex, Religion, and Other Hang-Ups has charm

    1 of 1 2 of 1

James Gangl’s monologue about how the Catholic Church screwed up his sex life will probably pack ’em in at the Vancouver Fringe—but not on the strength of this review. Gangl is a charming performer, energetic and attractive. He’s a dab hand with rhythms, and he creates some good running gags (“Now this is what she should have said…”). But, in a show about sexual anxiety, depth and vulnerability would help. In his story, Gangl seems to be earning good money, and he’s dating a smart, sexy, insightful underwear model who’s crazy about him. Poor puppy. Gangl’s exploration of his religious entrapment never goes deeper than a recitation of goofy saints and he resolves his dilemma by saying that he “put Catholicism on the shelf” for a while. That’s it? But the young Victoria audience loved it.
