On March 10 at 8 pm, Mexican-American singer Lila Downs will perform songs from her 2017 album Salon, Lágrimas y Deseo at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6265 Crescent Road, UBC). There will be a pre-show talk at 7:15 pm in the Chan Centre’s Royal Bank Cinema.
The daughter of a Mixtec mother and a Scottish-American father, Ana Lila Downs Sánchez grew up in Minnesota and Oaxaca, drawing stylistic influences from both sides of the border. Through a career spanning more than a quarter of a century, Downs has won a Grammy Award and a number of Latin Grammys, establishing herself as one of the the most innovative exponents of Mesoamerican music.
“I’ve learned to respect the mysterious force of music, and been humbled by it,” she told the Georgia Straight in a 2013 interview. “It’s such an important vehicle to learn and appreciate who we are, also to forgive, and work out matters of emotion and identity."
On her 10th studio album, Salon, Lágrimas y Deseo, Downs sings songs honouring iconic Latin American women, and the Chan Centre audience will be among the first to hear these empowering and uplifting anthems live.
Tickets for Lila Downs start at $46 and are available at the Chan Centre box office. Call 604-822-2697 or visit the Chan Centre website for for information.
