On March 17 at 8 p.m., Vancouver New Music presents Sumire Yoshihara and Miyama McQueen-Tokita in concert at the Annex (823 Seymour Street). The artists will give a free lecture/demonstration on March 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Native Education College's Fireside Lounge (285 East 5th Avenue).

Considered giants of contemporary music, Japan's Sumire Yoshihara (percussion) and Miyama McQueen-Tokita (koto) will perform solo and duo works by Maki Ishii, Michio Kitazume, and Teizo Matsumura, as well as a new duo by Yoichi Sugiyama.

“Among the rich offerings of VNM’s 2017-18 season, we are excited to welcome ancestral and radical sounds from two of Japan’s most celebrated musicians devoted to new sounds and composition,” says Giorgio Magnanensi, artistic director of Vancouver New Music. “This will be a unique and rare opportunity to experience two amazing sound explorers of the Japanese contemporary-music scene.”

Tickets for Sumire Yoshihara and Miyama McQueen-Tokita range from $12 to $29 and are available from Brown Paper Tickets. For more information, visit the Vancouver New Music website.
