Studio 58's 2018-19 season tackles subjects from internet porn to synchronized swimming
Studio 58’s upcoming season will feature grand musical numbers, synchronized swimming and even internet porn.
The Langara College-based theatre group will present three large-scale productions as well as several smaller initiatives for its upcoming 53rd season.
The season will launch on Sept. 27 with Incognito Mode: A Play About Porn, which runs until October 14. The production is a new version of the P*rn Project presented as part of Studio 58’s Risky Nights last year and explores the complex relationship people have with porn in the digital age. Directed by Chelsea Haberlin and written and devised by Marcus Youssef, the production is a collaboration with Studio 58’s fifth-term students as well as Neworld Theatre.
Mortified, written by Amy Rutherford and directed by Anita Rochon, will run from November 15 to December 2 in association with Touchstone Theatre. The play is about a woman who runs into a man from her past and, in an attempt to uncover the truth about what happened between them, recalls herself as a 14-year-old synchronized swimmer struggling to make sense of the world around her. Betroffenheit's Jonathon Young is the dramaturg and Amber Funk Barton is providing choreography.
The studio will present the musical Cabaret from January 31 to February 24, 2019. Based on Roundabout Theatre Company’s Tony Award-winning production, Studio 58’s production is directed by Josh Epstein and will feature the familiar songs “Cabaret” and “Maybe This Time".
But big shows aren’t the only thing on the docket for Studio 58’s upcoming season. The theatre group will also present a variety of smaller initiatives.
The studio will premiere a web pilot with the working title “The Way Station” on November 26. The pilot is shot in a police-station morgue and features sixth-term students from Studio 58.
The Risky Nights series will return for its 19th season from October 9 to14 2018 and February 11 to 17, 2019. During this series, Langara students have the opportunity to create and perform an original theatre piece.
Studio 58 will also introduce a new initiative called Hot House from March 21 to 31, which features students’ takes on betrayal.
