Oh, those shoes! Funky Fluevogs take a starring role in Bard on the Beach's 1960s-set As You Like It
Shakespeare fans who are also shoe lovers have been slavering over the styles being worn in Bard on the Beach's hit Beatles-tunes-infused As You Like It.
Designed by Fluevog shoes, they were hand-picked by costume designer Carmen Alatorre for the way they fit with the outfits and the comfort they'd provide on-stage in the well-known comedy. Alatorre took the lead from director Daryl Cloran's bold take, in which he cut half of Shakespeare's text and added 25 Beatles songs, setting all the action in 1960s B.C.
The Straight's reviewer was blown away by the entire, head-to-toe apparel Alatorre put together for the production, putting it this way here: "I could have used up my entire word count for this review describing Carmen Alatorre’s costumes, so layered with far-out colours and textures that they risk inducing acid flashbacks for audience members of a certain age."
Amid the Fluevog footwear, the standouts are indisputably the sassy blue-, green-, yellow-, and mauve-striped, ankle-strapped numbers that actor Lindsey Angell's Rosalinde sports with her bell-sleeved, white-lace bridal gown in the last act. They're called the Bianca contrast ankle strap heel and are currently on sale for $199. Here are the deets, according to the Fluevog website: "Crafted with love in Portugal, they feature contrast leathers, zig-zag top stitching, custom embroidery at the heel, and a patent leather ankle strap."
Elsewhere onstage, Luisa Jojic channels Janis Joplin as Phoebe, sporting a showstopping pair of chunky platform bright-blue-and-green sandals with her hiphugger flares. We were able to track down those too: they're the Sarah slingback sandals (on sale for $249), and they also come in a flower-powered pink-floral version.
As You Like It continues to September 22 on the BMO Mainstage.
