Over 30 pianos have been set up around Metro Vancouver for public play as part of Pianos on the Street’s ninth season.

Available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the heirloom-quality instruments have been placed in high-traffic spots in Vancouver, Surrey, Richmond, Maple Ridge, Port Coquitlam, and North Vancouver.

Sites where you can find the pianos include Nelson Square, within the Hastings–Sunrise community, at Richmond Nature Park, and at Lonsdale Quay. They'll be there until September 15.

Supplied by Pacey’s Pianos, each keyboard is hand-painted by members of nonprofit groups like Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and the Cascadia Society. They’re also carefully tuned to ensure quality performance.

As part of the launch, Pianos on the Street will once again conduct a social-media contest that gives wannabe Chopins the chance to score up to $500. To enter, individuals must upload a photo or video of themselves playing one of the public pianos to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the hashtag #PianosOnTheStreet. The posts that collect the most votes—and those selected by a judging panel—will earn cash prizes.
