Dance Deck takes the art form outdoors, into an intimate back yard

Husband-and-wife team Sylvain Senez and Alexis Fletcher know what it's like to dance in grand venues like the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. He danced for Ballet BC before becoming its rehearsal director (a role he retired from in 2016), while she still performs for the troupe.

But with their now sixth rendition of Deck Dances, they take to a much more intimate space, set in the outdoors--namely, their own quaint Drive-area back yard. The idea is to present experimental, grassroots work in an intimate setting--their home, affectionately called Casa Om. As they've said, "We feel passionate about creating an alternative and unique environment from which to share this art with our community."

This rendition happens afternoons from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday (August 18 and 19) and the following week on August 25 and 26.

The show features a dazzling roster of dance artists and choreographers--several with Ballet BC ties--including Kirsten Wicklund, Lara Barclay, Dario Dinuzzi, Olivia C. Davies, Sarah Charles-DeCarlo, Alejandra Miranda Cabellero, Emily Long, Dory Hayley, Christoph von Riedemann, and Stéphanie Cyr.

Adding to the atmosphere, there will be an informal dinner reception for audience members and performers after the show, with meals available for purchase to support the artists.

Tickets are available at the door, but it's safest to reserve through Eventbrite here. Expect an array of new work in a show quite unlike anything you've seen before.
