(Community announcement by Elektra Women's Choir)

Experience the richness of choral music by women composers and arrangers as Elektra Women’s Choir celebrates International Women’s Day 2019. Named for a line from Joni Mitchell’s Little Green, this program offers music by living Canadians Kathleen Allan, Katerina Gimon, Ramona Luengen, Kate MacColl, and Joni Mitchell. Minnesota’s Abbie Betinis is represented with her lyrical A Blessing of Cranes, a tribute to Sadako Sasaki and the story of the 1,000 cranes. Libby Larsen is a major force in American new music, and Seattle’s Karen P. Thomas contributes the opening work, O Virtus Sapientie. Maija Einfelde’s Supla Dziesma is a lullaby from Latvia.

Two works spanning 150 years by Cuban composer Ivette Herryman and German composer and pianist Clara Schumann share the same theme. The concert’s featured composer is Montreal-based Marie-Claire Saindon. Join us for a pre-concert talk in which Saindon shares insights into her three featured works on this programme.
