(Community announcement by Vancouver New Music)

Vancouver New Music is pleased to welcome Splinter Reeds to the ANNEX in Vancouver on March 16 for their first ever Canadian performance.

An ensemble teeming with virtuosity, Splinter Reeds has the distinction of being the Bay-area’s first reed quintet. Formed in 2013 by five musicians highly active in the vibrant Bay Area music scene, Splinter Reeds is: Kyle Bruckmann (oboe), Bill Kalinkos (clarinet), David Wegehaupt (saxophone), Jeff Anderle (bass clarinet), and Dana Jessen (bassoon).

With their dynamic instrumentation, the group makes an evolutionary detour from the traditional woodwind quintet, taking advantage of the unique sounds of a closely related instrument family to showcase pieces by composers.

The sum of their wide ranges of experience – in settings that include free jazz, improvisation, electronic music, pop, punk and metal as well as classical – has enabled them to rapidly zero in on a distinct aesthetic identity.

The concert will be full of Canadian premieres, including a new arrangement of Hungarian Rock by György Ligeti,  as well as the world premiere of an arrangement of Anna Webber’s Rectangles 2.

Of special note Splinter Reeds will premiere Birch Patterns, for reed quintet and electronics, by Canadian composer Terri Hron.
