Follow the sounds of ABBA to Stanley Park this summer: Theatre Under the Stars has just announced that Mamma Mia!, the hit musical based on the songs of the Swedish superstars, will be one of the shows hitting the historic Malkin Bowl stage this summer.

The show that spawned two movies will be directed by TUTS board vice-president Shel Piercy, who helmed the summer series' runaway success Mary Poppins two years ago.

Mamma Mia! will alternate with the song-and-dance-filled Broadway sensation Disney’s Newsies. The show is set during the newspaper strike of turn-of-the-last-century New York City.

Featuring songs like "King of New York" and "Carrying the Banner", the production will be helmed by Julie Tomaino, known for her choreographic talents in TUTS productions like Hairspray and Shrek: The Musical.

Theatre Under the Stars runs from July 5 to August 17 this year.

It's offering a two-show subscription pack, on sale now through May 4, by visiting tuts.ca or by calling 604-631-2877. Early bird single tickets go on sale May 15.
