Canadian musician, writer, and visual artist Vivek Shraya has just been announced as the featured guest at Vancouver Art Gallery’s 2019 Heller Lecture.

On May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Orpheum Annex, the multidiscplinary star from Calgary will talk about the big new VAG exhibit Moving Still: Performative Photography, an exhibition of 13 India-based artists examining themes of gender, religion, and sexual identity. The show runs April 19 to September 2, as part of the Capture Photography Festival.

The South Asian Shraya, who identifies as trans, will discuss her own creative practice as it relates to the exhibit's themes of migration, diaspora, and gender identity.

Shraya has created five short films, and in 2016, she released a photo series, Trisha, featuring old photos of her mother juxtaposed with re-creations of the images featuring Shraya herself as the subject.

As a music artist, she has toured both as a solo artist and with Too Attached. Her books include She of the Mountains, I'm Afraid of Men, and the poetry collectionp even this page is white.

Shraya will be available to sign copies of her books I’m Afraid of Men and the soon-to-be-released Death Threat in the ANNEX theatre lobby following the event.
