The 9th annual Verses Festival of Words presents a world-class lineup of spoken word

      Canada’s largest alternative literary festival, Verses Festival of Words, is at it again with a 9th year of dynamic programming celebrating a broad intersection of poetic artists, including spoken word and page poets, storytellers, singer-songwriters, improvisers, and more! Come be swept away in a wave of word-bending wonder, where activism and art take centre stage.

      Experience the transformative power of words - written, spoken and sung.

      This year's festival features a world-renowned artists and emerging talents, as well as celebrating established and new artistic partners. Highlights include the Vancouver launch of Vivek Shraya's newest book, the graphic novel Death Threat (illustrated by Ness Lee);  performances from a number of other notable artists, including American slam legend and founder of the Capturing Fire International Queer Spoken Word Slam, Regie Cabico, founder of Australia's Word Travels, Miles Merrill (and Australian Poetry Slam champion Melanie Mununggurr-Williams), Vancouver Poet Laureate Christie Lee Charles, and World Poetry Slam champion Ian Keteku. Events include: the launch of Canada's newest (and first) spoken word publisher, Write Bloody North; the 9th annual Canadian Individual Poetry Slam championship featuring competitors from across the country; and showcases from Vines Art Festival, Surrey Muse Arts Society, and one of Vancouver's newest arts groups, Cultivate: 2 Spirit, Queer & Trans Artists Circle. The festival includes a youth component, Hullabaloo, featuring the BC high school poetry slam championship, and a week's worth of showcases, slams, workshops & community dialogues.
