Due to the rainy forecast for Saturday, the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival has changed the date for its annual event The Big Picnic to Sunday (April 14).
The outdoor gathering under the pink blooms at Queen Elizabeth Park will now run that day from noon to 3 p.m.
The picnic gathers about 3,000 people every year, with free family-friendly entertainment and activities, as well as food trucks on site from 11:30 a.m. for those who don't pack a basket of goodies. (Note that no cooking is permitted on site.)
The huge gathering is inspired by the Japanese cultural tradition of ohanami, which translates to “cherry blossom (hana) viewing (mi)".
You can really get into the act by sporting your best pink attire and throwing down a pink blanket; you can also buy one of the festival’s Petal Mats if you prefer.
