The VSO School of Music has announced its first ever Girls' Jazz Day, which will take place this Friday (June 28) from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The day is open to high-school students who identify as women or nonbinary, and will feature jam sessions, workshops, and performances.

The goal of the event is to provide coaching and mentorship to young musicians pursuing jazz, due to the fact that women only make up five percent of the pop and jazz industry.

"I'm thrilled that young musicians from all over British Columbia will be joining us for an empowering day of mentorship and music-making with a stellar faculty and teaching-assistant team," said Jodi Proznick, artistic director of Girls’ Jazz Day, in a press release.

The VSO School of Music is aiming to make this an annual event. The theme of this year’s session is “Playing the Blues!”

Girls' Jazz Day takes place at Pyatt Hall. More information, as well as student registration, can be found here.
