      Amid the food and festivities running at various locations downtown next week, seek out these two visual-arts exhibits.

      The Courage

      (August 31 to September 2 at the 700 Granville Block from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

      Toronto-based  Chinese-Canadian designer and artist Tong Zhou pays tribute to Taiwan becoming the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. To celebrate that event, which happened May 24, he has created his own pop-art portraits of the major players fighting for LGBT rights in Taiwan.

      (August 31 to September 2 at Robson Square from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

      Photographer Bao Khanh shows serene images of the people of Vietnam, whether it's women in conical nón lá hats working in lush green fields or children laughing and running in the sundrenched street.
