Arts tip sheet: Modulus Festival highlights, from Standing Wave to Flat Earth Society

Music on Main’s annual Modulus Festival has always reflected Vancouver’s cultural diversity, as well as music’s stylistic range, but with this year’s edition from Tuesday (October 29) to November 3, artistic director David Pay has staked out an even larger tent. Every event is a must-hear in its own right, but here are three concerts that show just how wide a spectrum the festival covers.

      Still Life With Avalanche

      November 2 at Studio 700

Three emerging artists, including Georgia Straight Fall Arts Preview cover star Kimia Koochakzadeh-Yazdi, join the veteran virtuosos of Standing Wave to survey Vancouver’s booming new-music scene.

      Flat Earth Society

November 2 and 3 at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre

The Belgian equivalent of our own Hard Rubber Orchestra offers a live soundtrack to Ernst Lubitsch’s 1919 film The Oyster Princess, then returns to the same venue a day later to join American saxophonist Travis Laplante for a free afternoon show of extroverted big- band jazz.
