¡Viva México! A Celebration of Women in the World of Mariachi

(Community announcement by the Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre)

Las Estrellas de Vancouver, led by its founding director Michelle Cormier, along with guest star, singer Melinda Salcido, and the dancers of Nahualli, will take a journey through the influences and contributions that women have made on the world of Mariachi.

From the first all-female group in Mexico City in the 1940s, through The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema – beginning in the 1930s and lasting until the 1960s – including the unforgettable contributions of such singers as Lola Beltran, Chavela Vargas, and Lucha Villa, to the energetic and imaginative contributions of contemporary artists, the impact of women on Mexican Mariachi has been extraordinary.

Las Estrellas de Vancouver select key moments to capture a musical form that continues to evolve and flourish, and that now boasts an ever-expanding international base of support. The evening will also include important dance repertoire, inviting the colour and skills of the Nahualli Folklore Ensemble to demonstrate the interconnection between the Ballet Folklórico and Mariachi.

You will be transported to the cantinas, the stages, and the barrios of Mexico. You will hear the melancholic melodies of the rancheras, the intensity of the Sones of Jalisco, and be swept away by the romantic Boleros.
