Vancouver Symphony Orchestra maestro Otto Tausk has assembled a dazzling program of cutting-edge compositions for this year’s edition of the VSO New Music Festival, titled “(re)-creations”, from Saturday to next Thursday (January 11 to 16). Here are some of the most enticing events:

      VSONMF01 (re)-creations

January 11 at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts

The fest kicks off with a spectacular trio of female composers: Korea’s celebrated Unsuk Chin, with her glinting, percussive Violin Concerto; Finland’s Kaija Saariaho, with the evocative “D’om le vrai sens”; and Canadian new-music superstar Nicole Lizée, creating soundscapes inspired by The Sound of Music.

      Nicole Lizee

      VSONMF02 Carte Blanche: Nicole Lizée

January 12 at the Orpheum Annex

Lizée is back for a full afternoon of work, including a much-anticipated return to her hit Perxploitation, which gives VSO percussionist Vern Griffiths the spotlight.

      VSONMF05: Waltz with Bashir

January 15 at the Waterfront Theatre

The concert’s a must-hear for cinephiles, named as it is for the knockout 2008 film whose soundtrack won composer Max Richter so much acclaim.
