February 14 to March 8 at the Nest on Granville Island
A powerhouse all-female collective of Vancouver actors is joining forces to stage a new version of Steel Magnolias, with a specific aim to raise awareness and research support for type 1 diabetes. Boone Dog Productions will also partner with the BC Diabetes Research Network and BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (Diabetes Group) in their presentation of the play that inspired the famous 1989 movie. The story is based on the true life of writer Robert Harling’s sister, Susan, who passed away due to complications from type 1 diabetes. The play surrounds the newlywed Shelby's decision to have a baby despite the risks posed to her by the disease. The show stars big local names like Gillian Barber, Jaime Percy, Lalainia Lindbjerg, and Ranae Miller.
February 15 to 23 at the Waterfront Theatre
Word is that if you like the movie WALL-E, you'll love BEEP--the latest wild and wonderful creation from Australia's acclaimed Windmill Theatre. The title character is a noisy robot who comes crashing down from the sky, and the story touches on fitting in, friendship, and finding home. The presenters at Carousel Theatre for Young People recommend it for kids 2 to 7 years old.
