Commissioners to vote on proposed Stanley Park sculpture installation

Vancouver park-board commissioners are scheduled to vote Monday (May 13) on whether or not to accept the donation of a sculpture of one of the city’s Portuguese pioneers, Joe Silvey (known as Portuguese Joe), and his Coast Salish wives, Khaltinaht and Kwatleematt.

It is proposed that the life-sized sculpture be installed at Stanley Park’s Brockton Point, which is the historic location of Silvey and Khaltinaht’s home in the 1860s.

According to the board, the artwork—to be donated by the Portuguese Joe Memorial Society and created by artist Luke Marston (the great, great-grandson of Silvey and Kwatleematt)—will be a four-metre bronze sculpture and will represent the connection between Vancouver’s European pioneers and the Coast Salish community.

City staff is recommending that the board approve the proposal because the sculpture is a signification donation and “is unique in its commemoration of historic European and First Nations relations”.

I liked the article. I think all that brings us the story of a place should be public is interesting to know the origins and what happened where we live.
