City Opera Vancouver has received a $30,000 grant to help launch Pauline, a work written by Canadian literary icon Margaret Atwood.

The opera company says the financial support from the Vancouver Foundation, a charitable group, accounts for 10 percent of the new chamber opera’s estimated cost.

City Opera Vancouver announced the donation on July 3.

Pauline, set to premiere at East Vancouver’s York Theatre in May 2014, centres on the final days of Canadian artist Pauline Johnson, who passed away in Vancouver in 1913.

The opera is being directed by Norman Armour with music by Tobin Stokes.

Thank you for this piece. The Vancouver Foundation's investment is extraordinary.

Please permit me to add our thanks to the Hamber Foundation for a recent award of $2500; to Stern Partners Inc for $10,000; and, to The Leon and Thea Koerner Foundation for $10,000 -- all toward the creation and production of PAULINE.

We are immensely grateful for their recognition and support.

New chamber opera is hard to do at any time, and new Canadian opera has to earn its way. Such friends as these make it possible.
