Fringe Fest 2013: Searching for Dick is so great it deserves a better title

Tara Travis’s new one-woman show recaps her semi-autobiographical quest to connect with her dead in-laws through a variety of mediums. As in psychic mediums. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, Travis’s show is a phenomenal exploration of what it really means to lose someone—even someone you’ve never met. The writing is clever and emotional, and her artistic decisions impress, but her delivery is the real revelation. Travis slips easily and quickly between multiple well-defined characters in a performance that is effortlessly charming and assured. Just when a moment teeters on the edge of being overly sentimental, she tosses out a joke and yanks the show back into hilarious comedy. It’s a bigger emotional workout than its name implies, but Searching for Dick is an incredible journey and Travis is rare talent.

      At the Havana Theatre on September 9 (7:45 p.m.), 11 (9:30 p.m.), 12 (6 p.m.), and 14 (3:30 p.m.).
