Musical America has chosen Vancouver Recital Society's Leila Getz as a 2015 Influencer.
She's profiled in the music mag's "The Influencers—The 30 Professionals of the Year, Special Report", released today (December 1).
The report states, “In continuing to juxtapose gifted unknowns with the stars, Getz’s Vancouver Recital Series remains an important platform for emerging and established artists on the continent.”
Musical America's Professionals of the Year are chosen as the performing arts industry's best innovators and market shakers. The 2015 Influencers report lists 30 honourees who are making a difference in the music business.
Getz launched the VRS in 1980, and it's grown to present 20 concerts a year—of both up-and-coming and well-known artists—at the Vancouver Playhouse, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Orpheum Theatre.
“When I first founded the VRS, it was to present young musicians at their beginning of their careers…to present young artists who are on their way up, to what I would hope will be great careers,” Getz told the Straight earlier this year. “That’s what I love to do most, is find new artists, and then of course some of them become famous, and then I have to bring them back. András Schiff is just such an artist. He played here in 1981 for us.”
The VRS's next concert is a perfect example of the way the VRS brings rising artists to the city for the first time: Uzbek-born pianist Roman Rabinovich, who plays here January 17 at the Playhouse, has been earning more and more critical acclaim and will be making his Canadian debut with the series.
In an interview about building a season this fall, Getz told the Straight many of the world's exciting artists now seek out the VRS because of its reputation.
“We have built one of the most loyal audiences on the planet. There are still subscribers that started coming in the first couple of years. I mean, hell, I presented a young female trumpeter!" she said at the time. "I think the secret of the longevity of the VRS is solely, completely about quality and relationships—it’s the audience relationship with us, and the relationships with musicians. I’ve got a fantastic staff. They’re all really great people, people that care about it. When they get excited, I get excited.”
