Inflection, tone, pitch, and punctuation—poetry is so much more than just the written word. The Poetry in Voice national recitation competition is helping to spread this art.

At the national finals, to be held in Vancouver for the first time, 39 high-school students from across Canada will battle with their voices for a total of $25,000 in prize money. Students will walk away with increased confidence in their public speaking abilities and a new understanding of the beauty of the spoken word.

The event will be held at SFU’s Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre (149 West Hastings Street), and will consist of two days of competition, culminating in a final performance on May 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets to the show are $10 for general admission, and $5 for students and teachers.

      Van Tech does it again!

Roan Shankaruk wins the English stream at the 2014 Poetry In Voice finals on Friday with her poignant and chilling recitations, and a funny one too. It was a great show, with dramatic poetry, great live jazz (provided by the Carlo Rossi Gang), and high emotions on stage and in the audience.

      Go Van Tech!
