Greek Day 2014 turns Broadway into a Grecian paradise

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Folkloric performances, live music, Greek dancing lessons and more await you on the main stage at the 2014 Greek Day on Broadway. The performances are just one part of the 10-hour-long celebration of Greece, which also includes food stalls, an Agora marketplace, and the Hellenic experience tent.

From 11 a.m until 9 p.m. on Sunday (June 22), the festival will close off traffic from between Macdonald and Blenheim streets on Broadway Ave, offering pedestrians performances by the Hellenic Community, the Macedonian Group and Minotavri, among many others. The shows will take place from the beginning until the end of the festival, with the opening ceremony happening at 2 p.m.

In the Helenic Experience tent, visitors will be treated to a replica of a traditional Greek home, complete with olive-oil tasting and beauty scrub samples all day long. For a complete event listing, check out their website. Admission is free.

Although I like to support any and all festivals in Vancouver, I'm finding Greek Days to be somewhat lame for the most part. I was there mid-afternoon, after the only live act (some buskers) finished, and the only music was of the canned variety that you hear in every Greek restaurant. The food was invariably charred souvlaki, with the odd juice stand and a taco truck. There were traditional dancers, but like every year they perform on a dark stage because it's too warm to have lights.

Surely there must be some Greek musicians in Vancouver that can at least accompany the dancers?

Although Greek Days does have a quaint charm, I think it needs a bit of a facelift. But considering it's free I shouldn't complain.

Sorry to say, I haven't been to Greek Day since the early seventies. Time to change that in 2015.
