Vancouver is set to become a hub for some of the world’s most celebrated writers this fall, once the 32nd annual Cherie Smith JCC Jewish Book Festival rolls into town in November.

Spotlighting authors from Canada, the U.S., and Israel, this year’s five-day event welcomes writer and psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom, who will discuss his latest volume of case studies, Creatures of Day, during the festival’s opening night; New York Times–bestselling author B.A. Shapiro, who will headline the festival’s popular book club with her thrilling historical-fiction tale The Muralist; and Canadian novelist Michael Wex, who will speak of the social impact of Yiddish fare, which he details with humour in Rhapsody in Schmaltz.

A day devoted to the intersection of Jewish and Asian cultures will also see B.C.–based authors Daniel Kalla and Simon Choa-Johnston present their novels Nightfall Over Shanghai and The House of Wives, respectively, while researchers Helen Kim and Noah Leavitt will share insights from their study JewAsian, which explores how race, religion, and ethnicity have become increasingly intertwined in North American households.

A number of readings, panel discussions, screenwriting workshops, and book sales will also be conducted throughout the week.

The Cherie Smith JCC Jewish Book Festival takes place from November 27 to December 1 at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (950 West 41st Avenue).
