Vancouver Fringe Festival review: Jon Bennett: My Dad's Deaths (A Comedy)

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Australian storyteller Jon Bennett has an axe to grind about how his life has been dominated by his “melodramatic and accident-prone” father, a man who claims never to have uttered a swear word, and who finds knock-knock jokes “offensive to homeless people”.

What a great foil for bad-boy comedian Bennett, who structures this monologue around his dad’s many brushes with both death (he has a bad habit of falling off ladders) and disappointment. Bennett’s not the most polished raconteur at the Fringe—his frenetic delivery feels affected and his pacing could be sharper—but the stories are often hilarious, and his material is heartwarming.
