Vancouver Fringe Festival review: Curious Contagious

    1 of 1 2 of 1

There are all kinds of impossible creatures in Mind of a Snail Puppet Co.’s newest work: unicorns, dragons, and a pair of viruses trying to figure out how to replicate inside the unicorn’s body.

With their colourful handmade shadow puppets and moody original music, Chloé Ziner and Jessica Gabriel create a trippy experience that’s full of witty flourishes: the unicorn brushes his horn, takes a selfie, and has a smoke; the educational film’s voiceover has a surprising source; and the puppeteers are themselves a replication of the virus.

Though the choices sometimes feel obvious, these artists are true embodiments of the DIY spirit, and there’s no denying the skill at work in this epic, microscopic adventure.
