Vancouver Fringe Festival review: Everything Is Fine

    1 of 1 2 of 1

At the end of this solo show, a tearful female friend said, “You know the concept of Everyman? Well, this is the story of Everywoman.” I fear that’s distressingly close to the literal truth.

In Everything Is Fine, playwright and performer Jennifer Martin tells us about the rape she endured as a teenager and the effect that crime had on the rest of her life. In a small room in Arts Umbrella, Martin’s tone is warm and often humorous. Her gestures are simple and impactful: the way she puts her hand over her mouth in horror and punches her fist into her palm to physicalize both her pounding heart and the thrusts of her assailant.

This is an important, quiet testimony—with no easy closure.
