Chutzpah Festival unveils international and local lineup for 2017, with names like Spellbound Contemporary Dance and David Broza
Italy's Spellbound Contemporary Ballet, American dance artist Kyle Abraham, the Klezmatics' 30th anniversary tour, and Israeli music artists like David Broza, singer Maya Avraham, and Shalom Hanoch are just some of the highlights in the just announced lineup for the 2017 Chutzpah Festival of Jewish arts.
International, Canadian and local artists will converge on the Norman and Annette Rothstein Theatre and other venues around town from February 16 to March 13, 2017.
Amid the festival's signature strong dance programming is the return of Spellbound with its full-length Carmina Burana, and appearances by Israel’s Yossi Berg & Oded Graf Dance Theatre with their 4Men, Alice, Bach, and the Deer; Abraham's Abraham.In.Motion with a mixed repertoire; and Birds Sing a Pretty Song, a mashup of dance, film, interactive media, and live music created by Rebecca Margolick and Maxx Berkowitz during a yearlong fellowship in New York City with LABA: A laboratory. Local dance stars taking the stage will include Shay Kuebler, of Radical System Art, with the premiere of his full-length version of Telemetry; and Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg working with Italy’s award-winning Silvia Gribaudi as they look at gender, culture and language and understanding in a premiere presented with The Dance Centre.
The roster of concerts spans musical performers from Israel, Japan, Argentina, the U.S., and Canada. Look for Israel's David Broza and Palestinian Ali Paris together on-stage, America's Grammy-winning Klezmatics, Israeli rock star Shalom Hanoch with keyboardist Moshe Levi, Avraham of the Idan Raichel Project that has hit Chutzpah before, and Gypsy flamenco-Jewish cantor fusionist Lyla Canté.
Theatrical shows include a Wrestling Jerusalem, about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and high-speed improv artists Folk Lordz.
Comedy names include standup artist Mark Schiff and a comedy bill by Ali Hassan and Judy Gold.
On the literary side, author Christopher Noxon in “Hollywood Stories” features in a special prefestival event on February 5.
