On November 25, Uri Caine takes the stage at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre (181 Roundhouse Mews).
Kicking off the new Parallels series, Vancouver New Music will present the New York City-based pianist in an evening of music with a string quartet (violinists Cam Wilson and Molly McKinnon, violist John Kastelic, and cellist Marina Hasselberg) and the Vancouver Electronic Ensemble (Joda Clément, Elisa Ferrari, Lee Hutzulak, Constantine Katsiris,
Jules Lavern, Giorgio Magnanensi, Stefan Smulovitz, and prOphecy sun).
Caine will perform original compositions and improvisations in concert and, over the course of two days, will work with the quartet and VEE to create live remixes of a selection of his works for piano and string quartet. The evening will explore the combined sounds of the acoustic piano and string quartet, with VEE's atmospheric electronics.
In advance of the concert, community members are invited to watch the creative process unfold over two days of rehearsal workshops on Novembe 23 and 24. The open rehearsals are free to attend, but participants must register by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Music fans can also take advantage of a pre-show chat on November 25, 7:15 p.m., at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre.
Tickets for Uri Caine are $35, $25, and $15 and are available online.
