B.C. writers win two of the top four English-language categories at the 2020 Governor General’s Literary Awards

      The Canada Council for the Arts has revealed the winners of the 2020 Governor General’s Literary Awards, and B.C. writers have come up big, taking two of the top four English-language categories.

      Vancouver author Kim Senklip Harvey won in the drama category for KamloopaAn Indigenous Matriarch Story (Talonbooks)and Kamloops author Michelle Good received the fiction award for Five Little Indians (HarperCollins Canada).

      Each winner receives $25,000, with the publisher receiving $3,000 to promote the winning books.

      “Every year our creators push the boundaries of literature," says Canada Council for the Arts CEO Simon Brault in a press release, "presenting their vision of the world, surprising us and making us think. I salute the talent and audacity of the GGBooks winners, who are proving once again that literature is an essential part of our culture and life.”

      Other winners include Madhur Anand, who took the non-fiction prize for This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart: A Memoir in Halves (Penguin Random House Canada), and Anne Carson, who won in the poetry category for Norma Jeane Baker of Troy (New Directions Publishing).
