Face masks are still an essential accessory in Toronto. Until the province lifts the mask mandate, the coverings are required indoors to curb COVID-19 transmission.

So as parties, concerts, receptions and all manner of events gradually become part of everyday life again, the question of how to coordinate the piece of fabric with the rest of your ensemble might become more of a conscious concern for some.

If the occasion happens to be Fan Expo Canada 2021, how to seamlessly integrate face masks into cosplay outfits is definitely a pressing issue. How would Venom, Cruella, John Wick or World Of Warcraft characters rock a face mask?

The country’s largest pop culture convention returned to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for three days over the weekend in scaled-down form, welcoming up to 25,000 fans of sci-fi/fantasy movies and TV, comics, anime and video games. (Attendance in pre-COVID times was around 130,000.)

To find out how cosplayers got creative with COVID protocols, NOW photographer Nick Lachance hit the convention floor. Check out the best cosplay face masks below plus more photos from Fan Expo Canada 2021.
